The Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of the National Community Abroad, Mr. Sufyane Shaib, participated today, July 21, 2026, via videoconference, in the proceedings of the 12th session of the Steering Committee of the National Focal Points of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).

This annual meeting is part of the follow-up to the implementation of the decisions adopted at the 35th Summit of the Forum of Heads of State and Government of the Mechanism, held in Addis Ababa last February. The session, held under the rotating chairmanship of the Republic of Uganda, was dedicated to reviewing the implementation of the decisions and recommendations from the previous session chaired by Algeria, and assessing progress in implementing the Mechanism’s work program, as well as to discuss a number of organizational and institutional issues aimed at enhancing the Mechanism’s effectiveness and consolidating its role in promoting good governance on the African continent.

During his remarks, the Secretary of State, in his capacity as the National Focal Point for the African Peer Review Mechanism, reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to continuing to support the reform process of this mechanism and to strengthening its position as one of the fundamental pillars of the African governance system, thereby contributing to the consolidation of the principles of good governance, support sustainable development, and achieve the goals of Agenda 2063

He also highlighted the leading role played by Algeria, during its chairmanship of the Forum of Heads of State and Government of the African Peer Review Mechanism for the period 2024–2026, in launching the African Governance Index report project, which was one of the main topics of discussion during this meeting. He explained that this index serves as a strategic tool for evaluating governance performance in African countries on a scientific, data-driven basis, thereby supporting decision-making and enabling the monitoring of progress in governance at the continental level. In this context, he noted that Algeria’s national report on this index will soon be submitted to the Mechanism’s continental secretariat.

In concluding his remarks, the Secretary of State reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment, as a member of the Mechanism’s Troika, to continue actively contributing to the strengthening of African cooperation, share its national expertise, and support capacity-building efforts, thereby promoting good governance and African integration and embodying the vision of “The Africa We Want” as set forth in the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
